Chios doesn't shout like Santorini or Mykonos, and that's exactly its charm. It's an island of mastic trees, Genoese castles and beaches with no sunbeds — and with a car you can taste all of it at your own pace. Here's how we'd spend three days, but treat it as a menu, not a timetable.
Day 1 — The Mastic Villages & the south
Head south to Pyrgi, where every house is decorated with geometric "xysta" carvings, then the maze-like medieval village of Mesta. Lunch in a shaded square, then cool off at Mavra Volia, the dramatic black-pebble beach near Emporios — all easy to reach with your rental car.
Day 2 — Monastery, ghost village & mountain air
Drive up to Nea Moni, an 11th-century UNESCO-listed monastery with shimmering gold mosaics, set in a green valley. Continue to Anavatos, a medieval village abandoned on a 450-metre cliff — silent, vertical and unforgettable. Picnic or eat at a mountain taverna on the way.
Day 3 — Beaches & the golden-hour windmills
Spend the morning at a quieter beach — the ones locals keep to themselves — then wander the Genoese Castle of Chios and the old town. End at the Tampakika windmills 45 minutes before sunset for the photo everyone remembers.
Good to know before you go
When to visit: May, June, September and early October are ideal — warm sea, light traffic, soft light. July–August is busiest.
Getting around: A car is essential outside Chios town. An economy car handles 90% of the island; a compact SUV helps for gravel tracks to hidden beaches. See our full guide to renting a car in Chios.
Don't rush: Chios is for slow travel. Leave room for the unplanned café, the empty cove, the village you didn't mean to stop in.
