Pyrgi — the painted village
The best known of the Mastic Villages. Every house is decorated with the "xysta" technique — grey-and-white geometric patterns scratched into the plaster. The square, with the frescoed church of the Holy Apostles, is the most photographed spot in Chios.
Tip: Go early morning (8–10) or late afternoon for the best light and no crowds.
Nea Moni of Chios
A UNESCO World Heritage Site. An 11th-century Byzantine monastery with some of the most important mid-Byzantine mosaics in Greece. Its dome is one of the earliest examples of the octagonal "Greek" type.
Tip: Combine it with Anavatos (No. 5) on a full-day outing.
Mavra Volia (Emporeios)
The only beach in the Mediterranean with black volcanic pebbles, formed by an ancient eruption. The water is turquoise, a striking contrast with the black stones — a dramatic landscape with few people.
Tip: Bring water shoes — the pebbles get very hot at midday.
Tampakika Windmills
Six 19th-century windmills on the shore, built right at the water's edge. The most iconic shot in Chios. In the golden hour (45 minutes before sunset) they turn magical — the island's most photographed moment.
Tip: Park at the Tampakika marina and walk 5 minutes. Parking is free.
Anavatos
A medieval village clinging to a cliff. Abandoned after the 1822 massacre of Chios, it has stayed "frozen" in time ever since. Roofless stone houses, narrow cobbled lanes, an incredible view over the island, and an almost otherworldly silence.
Tip: The road turns to gravel for the last 2 km — an SUV is recommended. Come early for the calm light.
Castle of Chios
A 14th-century Genoese fortress in the heart of town. Inside the walls lie the old Jewish and Ottoman quarters, with a mosque, hammam, churches and homes still lived in — a whole multicultural microcosm.
Tip: Combine it with dinner in the centre of town afterwards. Park at the harbour.
Vroulidia (beach)
The most secluded beach in Chios. Reachable only via a 3 km dirt road — which is why few go. White pebbles, water like a swimming pool, no facilities. Bring your own water, shade and snacks.
Tip: An SUV is essential. September is best for an empty beach.
